I was watching the "Sticky"
I was watching the "Sticky" Trailer, and I thought it was really funny that one of the Sex-perts was talking about the masturbation statistics, and said that anybody who isn't claiming to masturbate are lying about it...but when asked if she does, she doesn't want to disclose it!
Still embarrassing to admit we masturbate
Great observation!
It's so interesting that sometimes even if we're comfortable talking about sex, or masturbation in a clinical way, it can still be uncomfortable to talk about ourselves masturbating. That's how strong the stigma is, and that masturbation is just so personal.
Prior to my interview with Nicholas Tana, their production team interviewed me for their documentary. The evening before the Sticky interview when I was preparing, I paused to think about how much personal information I wanted to share. It can be way easier to discuss such a value-laden topic in a clinical, abstract, and detached way. But I felt if I was silent about my own experiences with masturbation, then I would just be maintaining the stigma and shame, instead of offering the light-hearted openness I value in the Den.
There is nothing wrong with masturbation. Quite to the contrary, it's a wonderful thing! But the fear of how we will be judged for saying this publicly, even as professionals in the field (or perhaps moreso as professionals in the field), can keep even us sex-experts protecting our private lives.

You know, I never thought of
You know, I never thought of it that way! Being a sex-pert probably can make you feel a bit vunerable, because those questions do get asked!
But kudos for you, who not only tells others to be sex-positive, open and honest, but also does it personally.... That takes courage!
